Emily’s love of Snowsports started at the age of 2, when her mother who worked at the local ski lodge had decided it was time to see what she could do. It was then the amazing thing called skiing was tried and ever since the addiction has grown. The love of the sport started at the home resort of Swiss Valley in Jones, Michigan. First, as a student in the Mushroom Patch Program then, as skills and love of the sport grew going into high school she began instructing children and adults.

Joining PSIA-AASI Central Division in 2008 was the turning point, which opened up a whole new realm of passion and possibilities in teaching Snowsports, allowing for a multi-disciplined professional education to begin.

Then in 2011, Emily became the Director of the Valley Kids Snowsports Program and continues to enjoy running the program. Having the opportunity to better meet the needs of the clientele and the resort, by restructuring the children’s program. This change improved the quality of service to the clients and allowed the program to increase its compacity. Guest service and instructor training was improved through a children-focused staff training program, in line with PSIA and AASI level one and Children specialist standards. Developing the instructional skills and leadership roles of our Junior instructors has been a great accomplishment and a source of pride in a trainer’s journey.

Previous years of experience as a trainer for other jobs and a degree in communications/ public relations, focused on customer service and marketing helped the new program grow. A love of travel, the eternal search for snow, and desire for personal and professional growth in Snowsports led to a private quest to collect knowledge. How do other resorts and staff teach, train, and share their winter passion? That quest resulted in the home resorts becoming more fun for both students and staff. Being able to work side by side with instructors from other schools and participate in training around the Central Division opened up infinite possibilities to expand her professional career and personal growth with the infusion of training from Central Divisions educational staff, certifications in Snowboard, Alpine, Telemark and as a Children’s Specialist is just the beginning of the journey.

Continued exposure to so many great professional instructors and accredited resorts fuels the quest for knowledge, to share, and to provide the best experience for the client wherever knowledge meets the snow.
