Chester Bowl Improvement Club
The Chester Bowl Improvement Club received a $1,000 grant for its Girls Shred program at Chester Bowl, a municipally owned snowsports area operated by the Chester Bowl Improvement Club. The free program was designed to urge women and girls to use the terrain park. Programming consisted of 14 sessions: seven Freestyle Fridays, five Girls Shred lessons, and two special events. An average of 10 girls attended each event. A total of 69 different girls and women attended at least one Girls Shred program. A mixed-gender event, Freestyle Fridays, had 24 percent female participation. All Girls Shred programming was led by girls and women.
One family shared their experience:
It’s a really fun thing, and if you were looking to have fun with girls and learn how to do obstacles [terrain park features], it would be a good place for you – Ingrid, age 7
It’s great to have a place in our community where girls can be positively impacted by female role models on the ski hill. It empowers girls to be strong and resilient – Emily, Ingrid’s mother
Girls Shred is the type of program that builds and strengthens bonds within our community. Chester Bowl makes Duluth a healthier and more vibrant place – Zach, Ingrid’s father
