Experience Level needed: If you are comfortable riding beginner to intermediate single
track trails with some roots and rocks and moderate climbs you are ready to explore.
A flat to moderate single-track trail along with man-made and natural obstacles will be used for training.
What you need to bring: Helmet, Mountain bike in good mechanical order, water,
snacks and weather-appropriate clothing.
What: This ½ day course brings PSIA-AASI Certified Instructors and NSP Patrollers together to focus on the identification and transference of skills from sport-to-sport. We'll explore the connection between sports, emphasizing MTB movements, and the connection to skiing and snowboarding fundamentals. In this course, participants will focus on less apparent skill exchanges. For instance, body position and how that relates to balance (resisting external forces) and stability (managing external forces) and the corresponding movements we might make. This is not an intro to mountain biking course, but rather, a course connecting similar movements and concepts between mountain biking, skiing, and snowboarding.
Why: Mountain Biking on single-track trails offers excellent opportunities to illustrate and enhance our understanding of movement and performance fundamentals. Mountain Biking is a sport of dynamic balance, just as it is with skiing and snowboarding. Snow Sports and Mountain Biking sports both require awareness and management of surfaces, conditions, and obstacles. Both benefit from skillful timing and coordination of movements correctly, consistently, and comfortably. Similar as these sports are, Mountain Biking brings a more intensive "heads up, eyes forward" experience to the participant, while slowing other skill applications suitably for enhanced body awareness.
How: Using various features of single-track trails to facilitate learning. Participants will explore similarities and differences between skiing, snowboarding, and mountain bike fundamentals as well as the movements needed to maintain balance, increase stability, change direction, handle changing trail conditions, and manage speed.
The clinic will start with a safety and equipment review. There will be two separate rides with breaks for discussion in between. Each ride will be 2-1/2 to 5 miles in length on beginner and intermediate single-track trails with some complex, but optional features. Participation in both rides and clinic will be required to obtain credit. Intensity will vary by the participant from moderate to vigorous.
